Politicking (American Style)
If you’ve visited the site in the past few months, then you might have noticed that we are endorsing Barack Obama in the up coming election. And if you have visited this site, then I’m assuming you’ve been on the inter-web superhighway of life, thus you’ve seen a lot of crap being throw around by politicians. What surprised me last week was seeing a response from Kathy Hilton to a McCain ad that insinuated that Obama was the political equivalent to Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. I know the media has been throwing this around for the past week, but we here at Exreality actually like to show the whole story, not just the most controversial clips taken out of context.
As you can see here, Senator McCain in an attempt to down play Obama’s recent trip to foreign countries that only strengthened Obama’s (and America’s) image abroad and at home, insinuates that Obama is merely a celebrity candidate and questions his ability to lead. Finally, it ends with claims that Obama will raise taxes and become more dependent on foreign oil. Thank you Senator McCain for pointing out that democrats raise taxes in order to fund national social programs and that they would rather save the environment locally than destroy it with off-shore drilling, I never in a million years would’ve assumed that… This commercial was obviously created to instill the idea that being popular is bad. McCain has been facing a losing battle in popularity with the youthful senator in most age groups except for the elderly (see why they don’t matter by clicking here). Essentially McCain’s advisors have realized that if they don’t bring McCain into the public’s good graces, then they have to attack Obama by associating him with trailer trash train-wrecks and whorish hotel heiresses. The only flaw to that plan is that that is what propelled JFK into the White House (if you overlook mob influence) so many years ago. But honestly, Obama is in no way like Britney Spears, who was groomed by her mother to become Ms. Teen Pop Sensation, or Paris Hilton, who… well she’s rich and attractive… what else is there to say about that? She’s really slutty? Yeah…
Back to the point, Obama started out as an Illinois state senator for 7 years and then became a US senator in 2004. He graduated from Harvard magna cum laude for christsake, how the hell can you compare him to a brainless celebutaunt like Paris Hilton? Yes Paris Hilton, if you remember correctly she promoted MTV’s “Vote or Die” campaign during the last election and then promptly did not vote for she was not registered. I’m sorry to say that MTV didn’t make good with their promise because 4 years later Paris Hilton is re-entering to political arena after John McCain decided to drag her back in. Thankfully, she isn’t apart of MTV’s new (and less powerful) voting campaign “Choose or Lose”, but instead she is helping fuel her further mocking by starring in a video for Adam McKay on FunnyorDie.com.
After channel surfing the other night, my tv remote accidentally punched in 44, which in my area is CNN. Larry King was on discussing a video from Paris Hilton, and naturally I thought, “God how many times does she need to tape herself having sex?” But before I could change the channel, Ben Stein’s floating head appeared on the screen and began badgering Hilton for her tasteless political commercial…
For those of you who have not visited Funny or Die to view the video, it starts out by comparing John McCain to Yoda, Larry King, or the Crypt Keeper in the same insinuating fashion McCain’s ad did to Obama. Then it cuts to Paris Hilton in a revealing one piece and in her bobble-headed fashion, discussing being pulled into the political arena by McCain in his ad. Then she discusses an intelligent way to solve our oil problem (a compromise of the two polar stances taken by the candidates) and ends by saying she’s planning on running with Rihanna and painting the White House pink. Even if you cannot stand Paris Hilton, the video was humorous and a good spoof of McCain’s original ad, ala Saturday Night Live.
Unfortunately, the media fails to take it at face-value and without some plane crash or Olympic games to report on, they run absolutely wild with it. Taking the light hearted jabs Hilton had out of context in small clips, made it seem like she was personally attacking McCain. They referenced the old people montage in the beginning and are complaining about how this video was making fun of McCain’s age which is completely juvenile in the political process… Now if this was an actual political commercial, endorsed by Barack Obama, I’d be ashamed to support him, but it is a comedic farce of a commercial McCain proudly endorses himself! It parallels exactly what the other ad did, comparing Obama to people he’s “like”, attacking Obama’s ability to lead, and focusing on his stance on oil. I think the biggest thing people are missing here is that in the same way McCain can’t help being old, Obama can’t help being popular. They are both things outside of their control.
Why have we let the media get so out of hand that they can spin “news” anyway they want to. Larry King tried dissecting the video, but merely showed the insulting clips and took them at face value. They completely left out Paris’ energy plan, which actually makes a lot of sense (obviously this was scripted for her because she believes her own hotness powers our entire economical infrastructure). All the media wanted to do was stir-up controversy, which is no better than what tabloids do. Maybe the problem is the media, or maybe it’s because they’re just too old to understand the youth culture. Either way, McCain and the media need to get back to the issues at hand, and maybe leave the harsh criticisms to people like us. My judgment on Paris for now is that although she deserved to die after not voting in 2004, she helped make a funny at Funny or Die, so she shall live for the moment. Who knows, if she actually gets serious about politics, she could end up as the first women president… in a movie… that’s released straight to video… most likely because it’s a porno… entitled “How I Came to be President.”

we don’t have alot of freedom or rights in the media right now. fuck the man.
take ‘news’ with a grain of salt.
